School meals

School meals
We encourage all children to have a school meal, when staff foster good table manners. Some special diets can be provided on request.

Dinner money may be paid half-termly or weekly on Monday morning or the first day of the school week. Cheques should be made payable to ‘Surrey County Council’. Dinner money must be paid on the first day of term or immediately after half term to help us with our security banking arrangements. The school office must be informed before children change to or from school meals otherwise meals that have been ordered but not eaten will be charged. Advice about free meals can be obtained from the school office.

There are two sittings at lunchtime. The Reception children are closely supervised at meal times by staff and the older children are encouraged to help them by taking on a big brother/sister role.

Milk and fruit
The school is able to provide 1/3 pint cartons. Order forms and details of payment will be provided. We are part of the NHS Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. Fresh fruit is provided daily, except on the first day of each term. Children will be encouraged to eat a piece of fruit at mid-morning play.

Purpose of SNAC

  • To promote Healthy Eating within the school community; children, staff and parents
  • To maintain an up to date Food Policy for the school
  • To monitor school lunches and form a working relationship with Surrey Commercial Services who provide lunches to school
  • To organize events to raise awareness of food issues

Recent and planned events

  • The Really Good School Dinner Campaign, January 2009 – organized by The School Food Trust in conjunction with The World Food Programme. We encouraged children to try school dinners during the week and at the same time help children in the developing world to enjoy a school dinner. Each day children were invited to donate 10p (the cost of a school dinner in many developing countries) to the campaign. During the week we raised enough money to provide in excess of 700 school dinners for children in developing countries.
  • A week with a ‘Healthy Lunch’ focus, 23-27 March 2009. Children bringing packed lunches to school will be encouraged to ask parents for healthy options in their lunchboxes. Children will design their own ‘healthy lunch’ for a lunchbox or school lunch, taking care to ensure the right balance of foods. Some ‘excellent examples’ of lunchboxes will be sent home for parents information (packed lunch children only), along with a more detailed information letter. Some excellent examples of school lunches will be sent to Surrey Commercial Services.
  • SNAC fully supports the drive to improve the table manners of children, especially those in reception.
  • SNAC is seeking to enlist parent help to monitor school lunches now they are coming through the new kitchen. Monitoring to be carried out on:
    1. portion size
    2. balance of food
    3. children’s views, ie: likes/dislikes
  • Meetings are held half-termly with the next one scheduled for after the Easter break.
