After a busy Christmas holiday the children in Caterpillars were excited to come back to school and ready to learn lots of new things. We enjoyed sharing our holiday news with each other and wrote thank you letters to Father Christmas to thank him for all the lovely gifts he had brought us.

Our topic this half term has been 'Passport to the World' and the children have enjoyed having Barnaby Bear visit them to help them learn all about the wonderful city of Edinburgh! They used role play to discover where it was and how you could travel there. Barnaby Bear told us lots of exciting things about the city; the story of Greyfriar's Bobby a loyal dog who after his master died stayed by his graveside for 14 years, Holyrood House where the Queen stays when she visits and Arthur's Seat, a huge steep hill. But most exciting of all Edinburgh Castle which is built on an extinct volcano! the children enjoyed listening to the information so much that they used their Literacy skills to make their own non fiction book all about it. It contains headings, sentences, labels, captions, page numbers and even a contents page. At the end of the Autumn term the children had said they wanted to know about the different sports in Scotland so to celebrate the end of the topic Year 1 had their own 'Scotland Day' where they listened about the Scottish Premier league and played their own version of the Highland Games! They danced the Highland Fling and tossed the caber and even made their own family tartan.

At the beginning of the half term the children enjoyed learning about Baptism in RE. They enjoyed sharing their own experiences of Baptism and brought in lots of lovely cards and gifts to show and talk about. We were lucky enough to go to St Mary's where Phil performed a baptism for us to watch and be a part of.

In our Art lessons Caterpillars have enjoyed learning about printing. We have printed with recycled materials to explore the effects and patterns we could make. It was fun exploring printing with other materials and we enjoyed making and printing with a collograph and a polytile. A collograph is made by layering different pieces of card on top of each other and rubbing over it using a crayon. A polytile is made by using a blunt pencil to score a line into the tile and then rolling ink over it and printing the pattern onto paper.
